Head Greenkeeper

Gary McKie

We are delighted to introduce our new Head Greenkeeper, Gary McKie. Gary will be responsible for the day to day green keeping and management of the actual golf course.
"I started golfing as an 11 year old and spent many an evening and school holiday trying to lower my handicap. The love of the game made me pursue a career in the Green keeping, starting as an apprentice at Rossendale GC the day after my last GSCE. After attaining NVQ level 3 from Myerscough College, I moved to my home club of Green Haworth working for 4 years as Deputy. In 2005 I moved to Pleasington GC, being promoted to Deputy Head Green keeper after less than a year, where I spent 12 great years learning and gaining valuable experience. When the role of Head Green Keeper arose at Nelson, I jumped at the opportunity to work at a course I love to play, and one I am thoroughly looking forward to maintaining to the highest standard.
I am a keen sportsman and like to keep active either playing football or hiking. I am a very keen golfer currently playing off a handicap of 7. I try to play as often as possible, but my wife, 8 month old daughter and my Yorkshire terrier keep me very busy.
During my career I have also been lucky enough to be selected to work at Royal Lytham and St Annes for the Open in 2012, and again the Walker Cup in 2015. Personally I have also had the pleasure of playing some iconic courses, my favourite being Pebble Beach.
Together working with a great greens team, we aim to provide the course to a great standard week in, week out. Also, our aim and long term goal is to provide firmer, faster putting surfaces on a consistent basis.
I’m looking forward to a long and enjoyable career at Nelson Golf Club.
